Best of OUG! Top Dog Halloween Costumes: Chicago & Oak Park Edition! [PHOTOS]

Halloween is a pretty great holiday to share with your pet. Not only does every pup’s favorite word occur within its most popular exclamation, “trick or treat,” it is a day (…or week…or entire month) where a furry body running around in a little hot dog suit or carrying out an entire neighborhood watch shift, a.k.a. walk, wearing a skeleton outfit is not considered absurd.

Meet a few of our Chicago and Oak Park pet pals who are donning their best dog Halloween costumes in the spirit of the spooky!

This is Otis, Pack Leader Nicolette’s pup! Here Otis is dressed as his favorite Futurama character, Nibbler. Otis and Nibbler share not only a striking resemblance, but also personality traits as well. They both like to eat a lot of food (and will chow down on just about anything), they like to sleep, and their favorite thing to do (other than eating, of course) is to cuddle with Mom. While Otis was not as accustomed to wearing a diaper like Nibbler is, he was a good sport and showed only a mild disdain for the costume.

Here, Otis proves that being a superhero is exhausting. After a morning filled with getting chin scratches for looking too cute in his bat wings, he takes a snooze under the coffee table at OUG! Central. Surely, he is dreaming about flying around outside to scare all of the squirrels out of his trees! Bat doggie to the rescue!

Vern is General Manager Sara’s two year old Terrier mix that LOVES food and has a history of thievery here at the OUG! office. So when Executive Canine Strategist Laura saw this Hot Dog costume she just knew she had to bring it in for Vern! The first time Sara put it on him at home he strutted around like the little Hot Dog he is. She took it off and put it on the end table. Next thing she knew, Vern was chewing on it! VERN! It’s not a REAL Hot Dog you silly pooch!!!!

Vern on a scenic dog walking route in Chicago

Top 3 Scenic Dog Walking Routes in Chicago

Finding great, scenic dog walking routes in Chicago is something we’re always sniffing around for. While Sherlock’s nose is to the ground (searching for squirrel clues, of course!), it’s a treat for parents to take in such sights as unique architecture, local history, or beautiful natural landscapes. Our paws have done some walkin’, so we’ve compiled a list of our favorite routes across town for you and your pups to check out!

  1. The paths along Lake Michigan provide for some of the best and most scenic dog walking routes in Chicago! Vern lives in the Northeast of our Territory and loves walking along the Lake. There is a little known dog beach just North of Foster at the Lake, and it’s nice to walk by that area to watch the dogs play. The walk going South is great for skyline views and sunrises. Even on a gray day, this walk is scenic!
  2. We have a lot of pups that live in Wrigleyville, and a fun walk is around Wrigley Field. Beat the normal hustle and bustle of baseball season by going on a non-game day, early in the morning, or late at night–the quiet, stillness of the ball park is a treat. You can’t help but feel a little special to walk around such an historic area with just you and the pups!
  3. Lady Jane Mae & Bogey live just North of Millenium Park. It’s so fun to step outside their building, go West on Randolph, then enter Millenium Park. It’s nice and big, so in the middle of the day, there is plenty of space to walk around where you won’t run into other people or dogs. Just you and the pups being tourists in your own city!

Grant Bark Park Dog Park in South Loop Chicago

Best Dog Parks in South Loop, Chicago, IL

Dog parents understand the importance of finding a great local dog park. Dog parks are a great resource for your furry friend to run to his heart’s content, interact with other dogs, sniff new things, and buddy up to humans in attempts to gain cookies. It is also a great place for pet parents to meet like-minded neighbors and share fur-children stories! We’ve put together a list of the best dog parks in South Loop Chicago, IL to help you find a spot with the amenities, space, and cookie-dispensing humans that your pup is looking for!

In the City of Chicago, there are quite a few dog parks regulated by the Chicago Park District. Make sure you check out the rules first!

  1. Grant Bark Park: Located near the tennis courts off of Columbus Avenue, this South Loop neighborhood dog park is over 18,000 sq. ft in size. The park is fully fenced, double-gated, and has a tree-lined gravel area and lighting. At the north end is an area of commemorative bricks, along with person and pooch drinking fountains.
  2. Coliseum Dog Park: This South Loop dog park is located underneath the EL tracks at the intersection of Wabash & 14th Pl. While Coliseum Dog Park is not as large as Grant Bark Park, the 2800 sq. ft space does allow for some off leash play to its immediate neighbors. The park has ramps, pea gravel, and a long narrow shape.
  3. Montrose Dog Beach: Montrose Dog Beach is located on the Northwest corner of Montrose Beach (the point closest to the city). While not in the South Loop or Hyde Park neighborhoods, Montrose Dog Beach is Chicago’s first legal off-leash beach. For any pup deserving a good swim, it is worth the trek. Completely fenced in and tremendously large. Remember your DFA tag for year-round enjoyment!

Have fun exploring!
