  1. SpringBrook Prairie Dog Park: SpringBrook Prairie Dog Park in Naperville is located at 83rd St., West of Book Rd. The dog park is open daily one hour after sunrise until one hour after sunset. Dogs with valid Forest Preserve District permits can enjoy Springbrook Prairie’s off-leash area at the 83rd Street trailhead. Owners must have their dogs’ purchased permits in their possession when in the off-leash area. Applications for annual and daily permits are available through Visitor Services at (630) 933-7248 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Rules for the off-leash area are posted at the preserve. Dogs must be on leashes no greater than 10 feet in length in all other areas of the preserve, including the parking lots.
  2. Green Valley Forest Preserve: Like SpringBrook Prairie Dog Park, Green Valley Forest Preserve is part of the Dupage County Forest Preserve and requires dogs to have a permit. Located at Green Valley Rd. & Hobson Rd. in Naperville, there are actually two dog parks here: a large area for big dogs and a smaller separate area for small dogs. Also offered at the park is a water fountain and a nice shaded bench. For more information, call the park at 630-933-7200.
  3. Whalon Lake Dog Park: Whalon Lake Dog Park provides an 8-acre fenced exercise area where dogs can run free. The Dog Park also features a smaller 2.5-acre park for dogs under 30 pounds. A shelter and benches provide comfort for the canines’ human companions. A permit is required for use of the Dog Park. Visit Forest Preserve District of Will County for the fee structure. Other amenities at Whalon Lake include multi-purpose trails, picnic shelters, and access to an 80-acre lake for boating and fishing. The park is located at 1480 Royce Rd. in Naperville, can be reached at 815-727-8700, and is open from 6:00 a.m. to Sunset (April – October) and 8:00 a.m. to Sunset (November – March).

  2. Patriots Park: Located in Downers Grove near 55th Street and Fairview Ave., this is a nice area for walking your leashed pup. Patriots Park is not a dog park, and dogs cannot be off leash, but the park offers a beautiful walking path around the pond that we had to include on our list!
  3. Mayslake Dog Park: Mayslake is actually a dog park in Oak Brook, IL, but is near Downers Grove and worth mention. Members pay an annual fee to have access to this dog park, as well as the five other off leash dog parks that are part of the Dupage County Forest Preserves.

  1. Tom Brown Dog Park: This Tallahassee dog park has two separate fenced areas to accommodate both small and large dogs. Double gate entry ways separate this off-leash dog park from its larger Tom Brown Park. There are water fountains for both pets and people. There is a picnic area for guests in both shaded and sunny areas. Each fenced in area is grassy with a few sandier areas. Disposal bags and trash cans are conveniently located next to one another at the entrance of both the small and large dog areas.
  2. San Luis Dog Park: San Luis Dog Park is a great open area for your dog to run around and play off leash. This dog park is a single large fenced area for both small and large dogs located within San Luis Mission Park. The dog park is mostly sand with lots of trees, but it can get muddy after rain. There are water fountains for both pets and people. If your pup still has energy after playing with her pals, leash her up and explore the trails behind the dog park!
  3. Maclay Gardens State Park: Well-mannered dogs are welcome in the park. Dogs must be on a 6 foot or less hand held leash and be cleaned up after promptly. Dogs are not allowed in buildings, the garden, or in swim areas. Dogs are allowed on the 2 nature trails, 5 miles of multi-use trails, and picnicking by the river.

In the City of Chicago, there are quite a few dog parks regulated by the Chicago Park District. Make sure you check out the rules first!

  1. Grant Bark Park: Located near the tennis courts off of Columbus Avenue, this South Loop neighborhood dog park is over 18,000 sq. ft in size. The park is fully fenced, double-gated, and has a tree-lined gravel area and lighting. At the north end is an area of commemorative bricks, along with person and pooch drinking fountains.
  2. Coliseum Dog Park: This South Loop dog park is located underneath the EL tracks at the intersection of Wabash & 14th Pl. While Coliseum Dog Park is not as large as Grant Bark Park, the 2800 sq. ft space does allow for some off leash play to its immediate neighbors. The park has ramps, pea gravel, and a long narrow shape.
  3. Montrose Dog Beach: Montrose Dog Beach is located on the Northwest corner of Montrose Beach (the point closest to the city). While not in the South Loop or Hyde Park neighborhoods, Montrose Dog Beach is Chicago’s first legal off-leash beach. For any pup deserving a good swim, it is worth the trek. Completely fenced in and tremendously large. Remember your DFA tag for year-round enjoyment!

  1. Churchill Field Playlot Park: A dog park located in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago, at 1825 N. Damen, Churchill Field Playlot Park has a fountain for thirsty pups and spans .16 acres.
  2. Clarendon Park Community Center: Located between the Buena Park and Uptown neighborhoods at 4501 N. Marine Drive, Clarendon Park Community Center dog park offers .13 acres for furry pals to frolic.
  3. Hamlin Park: Roscoe Village offers Hamlin Park, a popular neighborhood dog park located at 3035 N. Hoyne.
  4. Lincoln Park Dog-Friendly Areas: Lincoln Park neighborhood has three great areas for pups to run and swim! At Belmont and Lake Shore Drive, the Belmont Harbor has a small enclosed dog beach area for pups to sniff sand and doggie paddle in the lake. It’s a cool place to meet other pet parents in the summer months! At Foster and Lake Shore Drive, dogs have the Northern .78 acres of Foster Beach to run, and at Montrose and Simonds Drive, dogs have the Northern 3.83 acres of Montrose Beach to play.
  5. Montrose Beach: Our favorite dog beach in Chicago! Not too far from the above-mentioned Clarendon Park Community Center, Montrose Dog Beach is located at Wilson and Lake Shore Drive. It’s the perfect place for dogs and their parents to cool off in the Chicago heat.

  3. Sycamore Dog Park: Dogs will find loads of room to run and play off-leash in the large designated (and fenced!) area of Sycamore Park. The park, located at 4517 Sycamore Park, offers benches and a bag dispenser.
  4. Warner Dog Park: Connected to Warner Park which is distinctive for its natural beauty and expansive tracts of land, Warner Dog Park is primarily defined by its links to the community. Occasionally, the park plays host to a variety of social happenings such as charity walk/run events and community festivals. The mid-sized park measures in at approximately eight acres.

  1. Dry Creek Open Space: Boasting great views of the Flatirons, Dry Creek Open Space is an awesome two-mile hiking loop with tons of dogs!  Dogs are allowed off-leash, as long as they meet the off-leash voice and sight control requirements.  Parking is available, as well as a picnic table for humans to sit, stay, and have a treat.
  2. Foothills Community Dog Park: Foothills Community Dog Park offers over two acres of fenced dog park—a 1.6 acre area for large dogs to run, and a separate .5 acre area for small dogs to play.  Dogs are allowed off-leash in the fenced dog park but must be leashed if leaving the designated dog areas to explore the remaining 3.5 acres of Foothill Community Park.  Be sure to adhere to all other rules posted at the dog park!  The park is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, and parking is available on site.
  3. Valmont Dog Park: Valmont Dog Park, like Foothills Community Dog Park above, features separate fenced areas for large and small dogs.  Large dogs have nearly 3 acres to run (good thing a water spigot is available in warmer months!), while small dogs have about .25 acres.  Dogs can be off-leash in the dog park but must be leashed the remaining areas of the greater Valmont City Park.  Be sure to follow all posted rules of the dog park.

  1. Maple Park Dog Park: Maple Park Dog Park is a dedicated dog off-leash area located in the Northwest corner of Maple Park (Harlem & Lexington).  This new dog park in Oak Park offers 12,000 square feet of crushed granite surface, benches, an electronic entry system, and a water spigot for the pups!  Maple Park Dog Park is open from sunrise to sunset.
  2. Ridgeland Common Dog Park: Located in the Southeast corner of Ridgeland Common Park (Ridgeland & South Blvd), Ridgeland Common Dog Park is about 8,700 square feet.  The dog park is open from sunrise to 10pm.
  3. Dog Park Plus: Dog Park Plus is the total fenced-in area of Ridgeland Common.  The entire area includes the above-mentioned Ridgeland Common Dog Park, plus additional fenced park land such as baseball fields and a ski hill.  Since these included areas of the greater Ridgeland Common are often in use for other purposes, Dog Park Plus is open select hours only.  The hours are infrequent and subject to change, so check out Park District of Oak Park’s Dog Park Information first to see if there’s an upcoming morning your dog can run free in the extended space.
