Best Dog Parks in Downers Grove, IL

Best Dog Parks in Downers Grove, IL

Dog parents understand the importance of finding a great local dog park. Dog parks are a great resource for your furry friend to run to his heart’s content, interact with other dogs, sniff new things, and buddy up to humans in attempts to gain cookies. It is also a great place for pet parents to meet like-minded neighbors and share fur-children stories! We’ve put together a list of the best dog parks in Downers Grove, IL to help you find a spot with the amenities, space, and cookie-dispensing humans that your pup is looking for!

  1. Katherine Legge Memorial Park: This dog park is located at 5901 S. County Line Rd in Hinsdale, IL. Dogs are only allowed at the park in the morning and evening.
  2. Patriots Park: Located in Downers Grove near 55th Street and Fairview Ave., this is a nice area for walking your leashed pup. Patriots Park is not a dog park, and dogs cannot be off leash, but the park offers a beautiful walking path around the pond that we had to include on our list!
  3. Mayslake Dog Park: Mayslake is actually a dog park in Oak Brook, IL, but is near Downers Grove and worth mention. Members pay an annual fee to have access to this dog park, as well as the five other off leash dog parks that are part of the Dupage County Forest Preserves.

Have fun exploring!

The Power of the Word “No”

One thing I have come to realize is the effectiveness of a strong “No.” It is useful in so many different situations. From “No, leave that alone” to “No, stop barking at that squirrel,” the word “No” seems to work like a charm.

One example happened a couple days ago when I was walking Tigra, a German Shepherd who loves Frisbee but does not like other dogs. Just like when we are walking any of our pups, I was on high alert to stay clear of people and dogs. We were a couple steps away from returning to the house when, from the corner of my eye, I saw a dog run out of one of the houses we had just walked past. Tigra didn’t notice so I picked up the pace to get back to the house quicker. The dog saw us and started running towards us. At this point Tigra saw the dog and started to get upset. We were a couple steps away from the door when the dog ran around the corner of the house. I turned around, looked the dog in the eye and gave a stern “No.” The dog immediately turned around and ran the other way. It wanted to play but quickly realized Tigra wasn’t all for fun and games.  I was so happy the pup got my message loud and clear!

Together Forever

Mr. DaVinci

Caution: This blog entry is a tearjerker.

About two months ago I met a 10 year old Boxer named DaVinci. His mom needed help caring for him as she was working 7 days a week and her husband was in the hospital. She told me at the Meet and Greet that ever since her husband went into the hospital, DaVinci was just not acting like himself. He was sad…clearly missing his papa. You see, DaVinci and his dad were best buddies. They would hang out together watching TV or out in the garage as DaVinci’s dad was too sick to work. They gave each other great comfort.

For the next couple of weekends we fed and walked DaVinci. I had the pleasure of visiting him one beautiful Sunday afternoon. I fed him first and he was so excited for his food, he ate it all under a minute’s time. We then took a walk along a street where the other side is a forest preserve. He would walk some steps ahead of me on his retractable leash, stop and look at the forest, hearing noises and wondering what they were. Then when I caught up to him, he would do a hop and run up ahead again, stop and either look back at me or into the forest. He was super sweet and seemed so happy to be out on his walk!

About two weeks ago I received a call from DaVinci’s mom that she would not need our help anymore. DaVinici had passed away that Tuesday night. It was hard to hold back the tears as she told me he suffered a seizure and continued to experience two more seizures at the vet. About two weeks later, I stopped over at her house to return the keys and that is when she told me DaVinci’s dad had past away that following Friday. They were buried together as DaVinci was cremated and the beautiful urn with his ashes was placed in his father’s casket.

They are now together forever in heaven’s garage enjoying endless sunny days and blue skies.

Puppy Patience

Mr. Max

Ms. Abbie Gale

It’s been a blast at Out-U-Go! Downers Grove during the past couple of weeks getting to meet and take awesome care of so many little puppies. From cutie pie Abbie Gale to little Mr. Tough Guy Max, we have been saying a lot of “Oh my gosh, your’re so cute and tiny” around here lately.  One thing is for sure, pups younger than one year old are a great test of one’s patience. For example, learning how to walk on a leash comes with walking a couple of steps and laying down for belly rubs or running around crazily all over the place. Another example is learning how to potty outside, which any new pet parent can tell you comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations.

One thing all puppy pet parents should remember when grabbing the SpotBot or picking up pieces of the chewed up remote is, “Patience is a Virtue.” It might take a couple of accidents and mishaps before your pup gets the hang of things, but don’t get discouraged. These little guys and girls may need some extra attention now, but they grow up very fast. Before you know it, you will be at the dog park and your pup will be all grown up, playing with their friends and forgetting all about you!

Summer Time Fun!

Are you looking for fun things to do in the Western Suburbs with your pet this summer? Well look no further because here is your summer guide to wagging tails and wet noses!

We had a great time at the 1st annual Paws on the Path event in Villa Park on May 21st. In addition to a relaxing walk down the Prairie Path, there was a best pet tricks and cutest costume contest.

If you missed the Spring Road Pet Parade in Elmhurst, you have another chance at pet parade fun on June 4th.  Come check out the 65th annual LaGrange Pet Parade in downtown LaGrange.  Grand Marshal, Johnny Knox from the Chicago Bears will be there to lead the parade down Burlington Ave.

The day after the La Grange pet parade is the Hinsdale Humane Society’s Pet Walk fundraiser at Katherine Legge Memorial Park. Bring your pup and make sure to say hello to Out-U-Go! as we will be there to support the doggies and kitties who are waiting for their forever homes. If you can’t make it to the Hinsdale Humane Society’s fundraiser, the West Suburban Humane Society hosts their Barkapolozza event on September 25th.

All summer long, the Egg Harbor Café in Downers Grove will be serving up meals made especially for pooches. Your pup can dine with you on the outside patio and enjoy a “Good Boy Charlie” (scrambled eggs, a dry English muffin and sausage) or maybe a “Tastes Like Chicken” (Boneless, skinless chicken atop shredded potatoes). Each meal comes with a fresh bowl of water and a tasty post meal treat!

We hope to see you out enjoying the sunshine and want to wish everyone a safe and fun summer!

The Millionaire Dog Matchmaker

I admit I am a fan of the television show The Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo.  Patti Stanger is the show’s central focus as she works to find love for her rich clientele. Often watching the show, I thought “what about matching people with the perfect pet?”

Cutie pie Maddie

A couple years ago our family pet, Sugar Bear, passed away. My whole family was so sad. My mom especially took it hard saying she would never have another dog as losing them is too painful. Years went by and my mom stuck to her words until one day she mentioned she was looking on Petfinder.com. I was so excited to hear she was considering getting another dog! I sprang into question mode asking her what breeds she was thinking about, if she wanted a puppy or an older dog, a little dog or a big dog…

One of the best things about being Top Dog of the Downers Grove Out-U-Go! is working with the local shelters. I regularly visit the Hinsdale Humane Society and West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove. With my mom’s ideal dog in mind, I would always take a peek at the pups.

One day I was on the Hinsdale Humane Society’s website browsing the available pets when I saw her. Her name was Maddie, she was adorable and most importantly she matched the description my mom gave me. I immediately sent the link to my mom and received a phone call shortly after from my mom saying that we had to get over there to meet her.

Needless to say, it was love at first sight for both my mom and Maddie. Maddie has only been with our family for a couple of months but my mom says it feels like she has been with the family forever.  They have so much fun going for walks and snuggling together on the couch.

All I can say is move over Patti Stanger as there is a new matchmaker in town!

Two Weeks with Sam

Back in November I met a Yellow Lab named Sam from Villa Park. Sam was 14 years old and in good shape despite two back legs that would occasionally give out due to arthritis. His parents were planning a trip to Hawaii for two weeks in February and needed someone to take awesome care of him while they were away.

Months went by and it was finally time for the first visit. Everything went just right! He ate all his food and snacks, we went on a short walk and he even grabbed his tennis ball for a short romp. Two days pass of perfection and then Mother Nature decided to step in with the third biggest snow storm in Chicago’s history. As the storm was approaching, I was getting scared and nervous. I knew no matter what, I had to get to Sam for his last visit of the night at 9:30pm, which was when meteorologists were predicting the storm would be at its worst.

As I was driving to Sam’s that night, the wind was so strong it was blowing a speed limit sign back and forth like I had seen during the coverage of Hurricane Katrina. I hit blackout conditions, skidded down the road and at one point almost got stuck in the snow. A drive that should have taken me ten minutes, took about 45 minutes but I got there safe and sound. I opened the door and there was Sam, sleeping on his bed. Sam had no idea the craziness that was going on outside until I opened the door to let him out for his last potty break. He looked outside, looked at me, turned around and went back to his bed!

I wasn’t mad at him for not going outside. I would not have gone outside either if it was not for Sam. The funny thing is after the storm was over, I was happy I left my house. I can say I really experienced one of the biggest storms in Chicago’s history. It was an adventure and a night I will never forget. I will also never forget my two weeks caring for sweet Sam.
