Keep up with what’s happening at Out-U-Go Denver.

Diahh-Roomba

Out-U-Go! staff meetings typically involve bagels, coffee, orders of business and staff members sharing  some of their experiences working at Out-U-Go!  It usually becomes clear that some of our Pet Parents’ homes produce more stories than others and at a recent meeting, one particular household of dogs proved to have A LOT of stories (mostly about poop).  Of those stories, one sticks out in particular…

To protect their anonymity, let’s refer to the dogs as Penny and Gretta G.  Now, Penny and Gretta share a special flare for life as well as anything and everything edible and not edible.  As such, it’s not uncommon for them to crap on the floor… but hey, even the best of us have the occasional accident.

Like most dogs, these two shed a lot so their owner purchased a Roomba to keep the hardwood floors clean while he’s at work.  If you don’t know, a Roomba is a Frisbee sized robot vacuum designed to roam the house cleaning the floor while you’re at work.  Between a mid day visit for the dogs from Out-U-Go! and a hard working Roomba, this Pet Parent had a lot to look forward to every time he opened his door after a hard day at work.

One day, like all days, Penny and Gretta’s owner kissed his two beautiful dogs goodbye, released the Roomba to do its thing and drove off to work.  A few hours later our walker arrived to find a house full of diarrhea and a hard working Roomba.

As it turns out, the standard Roomba is not equipped to clean a house full of diarhea, but not due to any lack of effort.  By following the parallel diarrhea tracks around the living room and noting the skid marks of partially-dry diarrhea with wheel tracks through them, our walker could clearly see the Roomba’s morning long effort to vacuum up diarrhea.  Because the Roomba has a sensor that determines whether an area is clean or whether it needs more vacuuming, it diligently attempted to clean several areas with back and forth motions until the sensor read clean.  Had the Roomba been mounted on a WWI tank it might have had a chance, but alas, the standard model uses plastic wheels and the sensor never read clean so back and forth it went.  Despite giving it the old college try, our walker wasn’t able to get the floor completely clean, just like the Roomba.

Upon hearing of this incident, our office staff picked up the phone and called this Pet Parent at work to inform him of what happened.  He responded with mostly curse words.  Penny and Gretta bounced back fairly quickly and were ready for their mid-day walk the very next day.  The Roomba, however, was never the same.

Stormy Weather

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks here in Denver! Having moved from the East Coast less than a year ago, I was expecting 80-90 degrees of dry heat from about June through September. Needless to say, the non-stop storms we’ve been experiencing have been a bit of a surprise. While it’s good to see the sprinklers (hopefully) turned off for a bit, the torrential downpours, terrifying thunder and lightning, and canoes making their way down Colfax have definitely been a bit much. It’s fair to say that it’s been raining cats and dogs!

Of course, as Pet Parents, our first thoughts in these situations tend to be “OH MY GOODNESS! IS MY BABY OK??” This was me last night, anyway, stranded at my friend’s house knowing poor Bosco was probably petrified (I even started to imagine regression into peeing or pooping in the house). When I finally did make it home, shivering and drenched, Bosco was just sleeping, seemingly unaware of the storm and quite puzzled as to why I was so wet.

While I know some dogs really are very much afraid of storms and bad weather, this incident reminded me of how inclined we are to forget true canine instinct. Sure, pups sleep in beds, eat packaged food, play with toys and, all in all, could not successfully make it on their own for more than just a few days. But, like us, they have experienced storms and rain and snow and natural disasters for thousands and thousands of years, both in the wild and as domesticated creatures and they’ve lived to tell the tale (tail?). I guess this was a reminder, at least for me, to respect and acknowledge the wild within our furry friends.

Stay dry everyone!

Highlands Fair Recap

We had a wonderful time at the Highlands Street Fair this past Saturday! The fun began around 10am as merchants and guests gathered together all along 32nd Street. Our booth was located between Newton and Osceola, right near the bouncy castles and slides!

We had some great help from our Pack Leader, Alex, as well as our Highlands’ walker, Treasure. Of course, Dan came down from Boulder to reconvene with all of the Denver Pet Parents. We got to meet a ton of awesome pups and people alike who all seemed to be enjoying the wonderful weather, delicious food, and fun atmosphere! Some of our furry friends definitely enjoyed taking a breather at our tent for some cold water and yummy treats since it did get quite hot at times! We also got some great participation in our raffle for 3 FREE dog walks! Stay tuned for winner announcements.

All in all, it was a pretty fantastic way to spend a Saturday in Denver! What else can beat puppies, treats (for humans and pups!), sun and most importantly, thousands of smiling faces? Thanks for stopping by and see you all next year!!

A Local Shout-Out: Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital

I’ve recently gotten in touch with several veterinary clinics in and around the Denver area and we wanted to give a special shout-out to Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital.

Now there are a TON of great vets out there but as we all know, a sick pup or kitty can often be a bit of a strain on the wallet. Unfortunately, for some people out there, a vet visit just might not be in the cards for financial reasons and that’s where Harrison Memorial steps in. Their goal is to “provide quality, comprehensive, and compassionate […] care for the economically disadvantaged.” They want to make sure that all of our furry friends out there at least have the option to receive care. The clinic is also a huge advocate of spaying and neutering in order to lower animal over-population in our country.

In a few weeks, Harrison Memorial will be holding their annual fundraiser gala Mutts and Models! This year’s theme is “Breakfast at Sniffany’s!” What could be more fun than a Canine and Celebrity Fashion Show?! Pups and models alike will be strutting their stuff up there all to benefit underprivileged pets. The fun begins at 7:30pm on Saturday, May 21st, 2011. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit: http://cvmf.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=98. We hope you’ll make it!!

A Happy Pooch Makes a Happy Human!

We all already know that dogs have a serious impact on our lives. After all, they’re the reason we rush home at night, wake up early on weekends, spend countless hours in sub-zero and scorching temperatures when we could be curled up at home with the heat or the AC pumping, etc. Here at Out-U-Go!, they’re even the reason we have jobs (yes, that might be a bit on the extreme side, we know…)!

It’s interesting to think about all of the things that we would or would not do without those adorable little furry faces in our lives. As studies have shown, pup parents have an overall tendency to be more active than their pup-free neighbors. In my experience though, not only will your furry friend determine how much exercise and time outside you might get, he or she will also determine your overall hobbies.

Take Treasure for example, one of Denver’s finest and most fearless (as our Highlands walker, she spends her day with a plethora of adorable pooches but they certainly don’t come small!) Out-U-Go! dog walkers. One of the first things that Treasure told me when I was interviewing her for the position was how Cinder, her Doberman-lab mix, has basically taken skiing out of the equation for Treasure. Instead, they’ve taken up snowshoeing, an activity that our for-legged counterparts can enjoy just as much, if not more, as us. Getting my dog, Bosco, has had a similar effect on my life. Having moved to Denver in September, I was wavering back and forth as to whether or not I should reconnect with my childhood skiing memories. For better or for worse (I am leaning towards better–snowshoeing is a much cheaper and calmer sport), my outdoor adventures this winter involved much more steady uphill climb than speedy alpine descents. Well…except maybe for Bosco…he quickly learned that he can run down a snow covered slope, throw himself on his back and sled on down, no joke. When all is said and done, how could I possibly deny the Bosc a day in the snowy mountains when he is part husky?

Frado, one of the newest members of our furry family, has introduced a very particular past-time to his human family. Frado, a Cavalier King Charles, absolutely LOVES bubbles! He will chase them and bite them and pop them and if the bubbles ever stop coming, he will bark them back to life. It’s just about the most adorable thing you will ever see! And thanks to his little puppy obsession, his pet parents have been able to reconnect with their inner-child and spend many sunny afternoon hours blowing bubbles.

Even when pups don’t introduce us to new sports and hobbies, they certainly encourage us to pursue them to their fullest. In my neighborhood, I regularly see skateboarding pups. Well, okay, they’re not actually skateboarding but they’re running full speed ahead with a skateboarder on the other end of the leash. And they sure seem to love it!

Next time you find yourself playing frisbee or throwing a ball around or camping or hiking or basically partaking in any outdoor activity, just ask yourself if you’d be doing this if it wasn’t for your pooch. I guess that despite the many sacrifices that we find ourselves making for our furry loved ones, there is really only one thing that we can say to them: Pups, you ROCK!
