  1. SpringBrook Prairie Dog Park: SpringBrook Prairie Dog Park in Naperville is located at 83rd St., West of Book Rd. The dog park is open daily one hour after sunrise until one hour after sunset. Dogs with valid Forest Preserve District permits can enjoy Springbrook Prairie’s off-leash area at the 83rd Street trailhead. Owners must have their dogs’ purchased permits in their possession when in the off-leash area. Applications for annual and daily permits are available through Visitor Services at (630) 933-7248 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Rules for the off-leash area are posted at the preserve. Dogs must be on leashes no greater than 10 feet in length in all other areas of the preserve, including the parking lots.
  2. Green Valley Forest Preserve: Like SpringBrook Prairie Dog Park, Green Valley Forest Preserve is part of the Dupage County Forest Preserve and requires dogs to have a permit. Located at Green Valley Rd. & Hobson Rd. in Naperville, there are actually two dog parks here: a large area for big dogs and a smaller separate area for small dogs. Also offered at the park is a water fountain and a nice shaded bench. For more information, call the park at 630-933-7200.
  3. Whalon Lake Dog Park: Whalon Lake Dog Park provides an 8-acre fenced exercise area where dogs can run free. The Dog Park also features a smaller 2.5-acre park for dogs under 30 pounds. A shelter and benches provide comfort for the canines’ human companions. A permit is required for use of the Dog Park. Visit Forest Preserve District of Will County for the fee structure. Other amenities at Whalon Lake include multi-purpose trails, picnic shelters, and access to an 80-acre lake for boating and fishing. The park is located at 1480 Royce Rd. in Naperville, can be reached at 815-727-8700, and is open from 6:00 a.m. to Sunset (April – October) and 8:00 a.m. to Sunset (November – March).

  1. Tom Brown Dog Park: This Tallahassee dog park has two separate fenced areas to accommodate both small and large dogs. Double gate entry ways separate this off-leash dog park from its larger Tom Brown Park. There are water fountains for both pets and people. There is a picnic area for guests in both shaded and sunny areas. Each fenced in area is grassy with a few sandier areas. Disposal bags and trash cans are conveniently located next to one another at the entrance of both the small and large dog areas.
  2. San Luis Dog Park: San Luis Dog Park is a great open area for your dog to run around and play off leash. This dog park is a single large fenced area for both small and large dogs located within San Luis Mission Park. The dog park is mostly sand with lots of trees, but it can get muddy after rain. There are water fountains for both pets and people. If your pup still has energy after playing with her pals, leash her up and explore the trails behind the dog park!
  3. Maclay Gardens State Park: Well-mannered dogs are welcome in the park. Dogs must be on a 6 foot or less hand held leash and be cleaned up after promptly. Dogs are not allowed in buildings, the garden, or in swim areas. Dogs are allowed on the 2 nature trails, 5 miles of multi-use trails, and picnicking by the river.

In the City of Chicago, there are quite a few dog parks regulated by the Chicago Park District. Make sure you check out the rules first!

  1. Grant Bark Park: Located near the tennis courts off of Columbus Avenue, this South Loop neighborhood dog park is over 18,000 sq. ft in size. The park is fully fenced, double-gated, and has a tree-lined gravel area and lighting. At the north end is an area of commemorative bricks, along with person and pooch drinking fountains.
  2. Coliseum Dog Park: This South Loop dog park is located underneath the EL tracks at the intersection of Wabash & 14th Pl. While Coliseum Dog Park is not as large as Grant Bark Park, the 2800 sq. ft space does allow for some off leash play to its immediate neighbors. The park has ramps, pea gravel, and a long narrow shape.
  3. Montrose Dog Beach: Montrose Dog Beach is located on the Northwest corner of Montrose Beach (the point closest to the city). While not in the South Loop or Hyde Park neighborhoods, Montrose Dog Beach is Chicago’s first legal off-leash beach. For any pup deserving a good swim, it is worth the trek. Completely fenced in and tremendously large. Remember your DFA tag for year-round enjoyment!

  1. Churchill Field Playlot Park: A dog park located in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago, at 1825 N. Damen, Churchill Field Playlot Park has a fountain for thirsty pups and spans .16 acres.
  2. Clarendon Park Community Center: Located between the Buena Park and Uptown neighborhoods at 4501 N. Marine Drive, Clarendon Park Community Center dog park offers .13 acres for furry pals to frolic.
  3. Hamlin Park: Roscoe Village offers Hamlin Park, a popular neighborhood dog park located at 3035 N. Hoyne.
  4. Lincoln Park Dog-Friendly Areas: Lincoln Park neighborhood has three great areas for pups to run and swim! At Belmont and Lake Shore Drive, the Belmont Harbor has a small enclosed dog beach area for pups to sniff sand and doggie paddle in the lake. It’s a cool place to meet other pet parents in the summer months! At Foster and Lake Shore Drive, dogs have the Northern .78 acres of Foster Beach to run, and at Montrose and Simonds Drive, dogs have the Northern 3.83 acres of Montrose Beach to play.
  5. Montrose Beach: Our favorite dog beach in Chicago! Not too far from the above-mentioned Clarendon Park Community Center, Montrose Dog Beach is located at Wilson and Lake Shore Drive. It’s the perfect place for dogs and their parents to cool off in the Chicago heat.

Dr. Jennell Appel is a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist at Los Robles Animal Hospital. Sounds pretty high tech, huh? Actually, this Tallahassee vet happens to be the only of her kind in the Big Bend Area!

Dr. Appel (Dr. J) has literally given Top Dog Elizabeth Tull’s sweet rescue dog, Delta, a chance for a normal life. Turns out, one year old Delta’s hips were in terrible shape. Making a long story short: after several surgeries, an epic battle with MRSA, a hip implant removal, and hours upon hours of rehab with Dr. J, Delta is zooming around and playing like any other healthy dog! Dr. J has given Elizabeth’s sweet pup a chance at life. Dr. J never gave up on this little waif of a dog and has worked wonders. There are no words to describe our gratitude for Dr. J’s hard work, dedication, friendship and brilliance!! She is a truly wonderful Tallahassee vet!
